Community Involvement

I volunteer as a Host Mom to international scholarship exchange students. These kids compete for a year in order to come to the US for one year of high school to be a cultural ambassador for their countries. These students spend a year here mastering their American English, making friends, and learning about life in Iowa and the US. I help them adjust to living in a new environment, support them through all the ups and downs of an exchange year, and also get to learn a lot about their cultures and countries.

I work part time as a local coordinator for Iowa Resource for International Service, the organization responsible for overseeing the exchange students I host. I recruit host families, match them with an exchange student, assist the family and students as they adjust to each other, and step in to help if needed. I attend our student orientation weekends, plan regional events and outings, and plan presentation nights in my community so that the kids can tell people about their lives, countries, and cultures. For more information see our website: www.iris-center.org

I also volunteer with my exchange students with various organizations around the Quad Cities.
